What do you do to promote your site?
I'm curious what everyone does to get traffic to their site..
Talking to other people, I have learned about new techniques and ideas that have worked for them. I have been told that press releases are a good way for new sites to become known, that and article syndication. People have told me that just submitting your site to the search engines isn't really that effective and not even necessary, that the search engines will find you if many sites are linked to you and you have updated content. Article syndication is supposed to be good at this since although your articles are displayed on other sites and taking away a bit of your content in a way, they link to you and when people want more they'll go to your site.
What methods work for you?

Well, your right about the search engines, as long as you have some inbound link on other sites, they will pick you up faster than submitting directly.

I submit my site to search engines. I also use meta-tags to optimize them in the search engines. I find that word of mouth is the best though.

I thought Meta-Tags where obsolete/useless now?

Definitely not, still used by all the major search engines to determine your page titles and descriptions in the results. Don't think you can use the keyword tag and show up #1 though

How many people do you think will type in "adfect" as a keyword if they have never heard of it before?

Exactly, its all about keyword competitors.
Check out Grunge Background, Adfect is ranked well for that
