I was browsing ShinyBinary, and was just amazed by some of the art I saw there. Specifically I absolutely love this piece. I was wondering if anyone has an idea of how to create something like this, I would love to learn

3D Model a gas mask
Start the piece in Illustrator
Finish it up in Photoshop

Linear Dodged layers of smudging/brushing, mostly. Just a rough guess though. I have a problem with large art.
I can see some custom shapes or patterns being used, too.
